It's Alcohol Awareness Month, it may surprise you to know some of your most beloved celebrities face alcohol addiction. As we celebrate Alcohol Awareness Month this April, let’s take this opportunity to highlight some of their success stories.

Robert Downey Jr.

Long before he became the iconic Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. struggled with severe addiction. At one point, his alcohol and drug use had rendered him “unhireable” in Hollywood. By the early 2000s, he’d been arrested multiple times and had even spent time in jail.

His turning point came in 2003, when his now-wife, Susan Downey, gave him an ultimatum: either get clean or lose her. That moment changed everything. Robert entered treatment and committed to sobriety, eventually making one of the most remarkable comebacks in Hollywood history.

Daniel Radcliffe

Known around the world as Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe began struggling with alcohol at just 18 years old. Though he never showed up to set drunk, he has admitted that he often arrived hungover or still recovering from the night before.

“I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes... I drank a lot, and it was daily—I mean nightly.”
— Daniel Radcliffe

By 2010, Daniel recognized his drinking had spiraled out of control. He made the decision to quit and became very open about his journey toward sobriety. Though he experienced a relapse in 2012 following a nightclub altercation, he used it as a wake-up call. Today, Daniel is sober and manages his well-being through long walks, exercise, and reading.

Drew Barrymore

From childhood fame in E.T. to romantic comedies like 50 First Dates, Drew Barrymore has lived much of her life in the public eye. But behind the scenes, she battled addiction from an incredibly young age. She began drinking at just nine years old and entered rehab by the time she was 13.

Over the years, Drew experienced periods of sobriety and relapse. After her 2016 divorce, she turned to alcohol again to cope with emotional pain. But in 2019, she made the life-changing decision to quit drinking for good. Today, she describes her sobriety as one of the most liberating choices she’s ever made, and she remains committed to living a healthier life for herself and her family.

“One of the bravest things you can do is slay those dragons and finally change an awful cycle in which you’ve found yourself stuck. For me, it was to stop drinking.”
— Drew Barrymore
