National Recovery Month: September 2024
Since 1989, September has been recognized as National Recovery Month in the United States. Set aside as observation on a national scale, communities are called to celebrate the countless people in the midst of the recovery journey. Organizations like SAMHSA: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are heavily involved in carrying out their mission to promote hope and healing among those in recovery.
Events coming up for the 2024 celebration are designed to:
- Encourage Those in Recovery: When someone makes the decision to follow a different path, leaving addiction in their past and choosing to walk the road of recovery, there are new aspects to be considered. Things like: Encouragement, for the moments when the decision is extra hard; Hope for the future, that there is more than just the struggles of today; and Support, for navigating the ins and outs of successful treatment for long-term recovery.
- Spread Awareness: Throughout the U.S., people from every walk of life have experienced addiction in varying forms. During Recovery Month 2024, communities will be educated about the ongoing needs for mental health and addiction recovery services, as well as encouraging those in recovery to continue reaching out for help. Letting the general public know more details increases an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding of what someone in recovery is facing.
- Recognize Dedicated Service Providers: Much of the success achieved by those in recovery can be attributed to the work of providers and care professionals. Obviously, the day-to-day decision-making to stay sober is a testament of the individual’s determination to progress. However, the dedication shown by those working with them through the journey should be recognized and celebrated as well.
- Announce Available Resources: Individuals in recovery have access to funding from initiatives and grants in both the public and private sectors. During Recovery Month, there is extra effort made to ensure these options are made known.
